Red stag hunting in Carpathian mountainsÂ
Dear visitors ,
we invite you to see a short and epic movie of the red stags in the Carpathian mountains .Â
One of the most beautiful hunts that can be made in the Carpathian mountains is the red stag hunt. During the hunts of the red stags you will have the chance to see different game species such as bears , chamois , boars , roe deer , wolves , capercailles .
The Carpathian Chamois has some of the best Chamois trophies in the world. The world record for chamois was shot in Făgăraş Mountains in 1934(141.1 CIC points). The hunting season start on 1st of September and ends on 15th of December. The Carpathian Chamois may be hunted during the day, between 1,800 and 2,500 meters height. From above the tree line and down into spars forest in the valleys below. Stalking and waiting at the places that are frequented is the main method. As with all mountain game the hunt for Chamois a great experience with breathtaking views but also that kind of hunting that takes its toll on ones condition. When sitting beside your hard earned Chamois you know it was all well worth the effort.
The hunt for wild boars is not a difficult hunt, the hunter must be quiet and in the utmost caution. The density in Romania has developed very positively. The highest density can be found in the deciduous and mixed forests which have a high proportion of oak and beech, and in which there numerous swampy regions as well as meadows similar glades exist. Romania is a very hospitable country with good country cuisine, beautiful accommodations nearby to the hunting area. Here can be found boars with the length of the tusks over 23 cm and body weight over 200 kg are no exception. The individual form of hunting is from high seat or stalking early in the morning or late in the evening.
 Â
Not many hunters know that Romania is home not only strong bears, deer or chamois, but also strong roe deer. The Romanian planes encounters a particularly scenic terrain and ideal roe deer biotopes for a first-class roebuck hunting. Ripe bucks between 350 and 450 grams are the rule, strong ones over 450 and more are not rare. During your journey you spend the night in comfortable pensions, hotels or hunting houses near the hunting ground. The hunting organization and logistics is very reliable.
Forests and dense bush are beaten through with dogs and beaters to drive the boar towards a line of guns, which shoot the boars, jackals and foxes on the run. This is an incredibly exciting form of hunting – the sound of a boar running through the cover towards you as you wait for your chance of a shot through gaps in the bush or across a track is hard to beat!

Eurasian boar (Sus scrofa attila), found in Romania, Hungary, Ukraine and across the Balkans and Caucasus, are the second major sub-species; Boar likes deciduous and mixed woodland, often with a mix of fields, meadows, marshes or moorland nearby. In the Carpathians, wild boar can occupy alpine zones in excess of 2,500 meters. Generally, wild boar are active at night and most easily located by sight at dawn or dusk. It is not unusual to observe them awake at rest or feeding within a confined range during daylight, and diurnal activity is often dictated by the extent of human activity.
In rare cases a large Carpathian boar can weight 250 kg and be more than 110 cm at the shoulder. At these sizes, either strain will be immune from wolf ‘s attacks. Before confronting rivals during the rut – when they bite each other, often targeting the genitalia – keiler (male) develop 2 cm-4 cm of subcutaneous tissue over the shoulder plate.
Best time to hunt : Winter time when the soil is covered by snow.

The Carpathian Chamois –Rupicapra rupicapra
The chamois is spread all over the world and can be found in 8 large  geographic areas: Alps, Pyrenees, Apennines, Balkan Peninsula, Asia, the  Carpathians, Caucasus and New Zealand. In Europe there are seven  known subspecies of the chamois. The rocky peaks of the Romanian  Carpathians represent the habitat of the most vigorous population of  chamois in the world. From October until spring they are black or dark  brown. In the summer months they have a light rusty color. Their body  length is 125-130 cm and the female is a little bit smaller. The male’s  height at withers is of 70-90 cm and they weigh 40-60 kg. The Carpathian Chamois has some of the best Chamois trophies in the world. The world record for chamois was shot in Făgăraş Mountains in 1934(141.1 CIC points). Red deer – Cervus elaphus
The red deer is found on an area of approximately 1000 km, the area where  the Carpathians lie in Romania. The population is well represented in the  mountains  and in a few parts of hill and lowland forests. The red deer  population in  Romania owes its vigor to the specific natural selection of the  Carpathian region.  As a result of the natural selection in the Carpathians the  body size of the deer in  Romania is superior to those that live in west Europe,  the males reaching a  weight of 280 kg. The body length of the male deer is  between 220 and 260 cm  and 150-160 cm in case of female deer. Their height  at withers is of 150-160 cm.  In summer the color of the species is reddish-  brown and grayish-brown in  winter. Between the years of 1981-1985 the  world record belonged to Romania  with a 261,25 CIC points trophy. The  national record for this species was  acquired in 2003(264,51 CIC points).Â

  Â
The common quail (Coturnix coturnix) or European quail is a small ground-nesting game bird in the pheasant family(Phasianidae). It is a small, round bird, essentially streaked brown with a white eyes tripe, and, in the male, a white chin. As befits its migratory nature, it has long wings, unlike the typically short-winged game birds. It measures roughly 18.0–21.9 cm and weighs 91–131 g . It is widespread in Europe and North Africa.Â
Habits: This is a terrestrial species , feeding on seeds and insects on the ground. It is notoriously difficult to see, keeping hidden in crops, and reluctant to fly, preferring to creep away instead. Even when flushed , it keeps low and soon drops back into cover.  It is a migratory species. In Romania arrives in spring , late March-April and leaves in September. The most beautiful and interesting hunting is with dogs.
Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto)
It is a medium-sized dove, distinctly smaller than the wood pigeon and slightly larger than the related turtle dove, with an average length of 32 cm from tip of beak to tip of tail, with a wingspan of 47–55 cm , and a weight of 125–240 g . It is grey-buff to pinkish-grey overall, a little darker above than below, with a blue-grey under wing patch. The short legs are red and the bill is black.Â
European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur): Smaller and slighter in build than many other doves, it measures 24–29 cm in length, 47–55 cm in wingspan and weighs 85–170 g .the European turtle dove may be recognized by its browner color, and the black-and-white-striped patch on the side of its neck. The tail is notable as the bird flies from the observer; it is wedge shaped, with a dark center and white borders and tips. The turtle dove is a migratory species with a southern Palearctic range covering most of Europe and the Middle East, although it is rare in northern Scandinavia and Russia. It winters in southern Africa.

The roe deer is the smallest representative of Cervidae family in Romania. As the countryside in Romania is much diversified, roebucks can be found nearly all over, apart from very high mountain areas and some very wet lowland areas. In the flatland of Romania, there are enormous amounts of roe deer. Their fur is reddish in May, June and their color becomes grayish in September. Their body length is 95-135 cm. Their height at withers is of 65-75 cm. The roebuck’s body weight (eviscerated) is 20-25 kg and the female’s body  weight is 18-20 kg. . The legal hunting season start on 1st of May and ends on 15th of October. The best time is in the first 4 weeks and in the rut , between 25th of July and 10th of August . In most areas the trophies bucks are of normal seize, that is to say with a trophy weight of between 250 and 350 grams. As this is a very special hunt, there are very few openings.
Romania’s best roe buck trophies:
1) 211.67 CIC points Prahova 1976
2) 204.62 CIC points Milcov Olt 1977Â
3)188.83 CIC points Slatina Olt 1976
4)186.20 CIC points Cefa Bihor 1969
The open season for the bucks starts on 15th May. Most of our guests choose this period, because this is the best time to get a roe buck.

 Â
In Romania the wild boar is spread from the high mountainous areas up the Danube Delta. Their body length is between 100 and 200 cm and their height at withers is 100-120. They are brown, dark brown or black. The legal hunting season start on the 1st of July and ends on the 31 of January  for sows and piglets. The males can be shot during the year.  The best shooting season is during the winter. The hunting methods are: driven hunt , high-seat & stalking .The best results for trophy boar are obtained in July- August in the agricultural fields, when the boar hunt can be combined with the roe deer hunt and in the period when the soil is covered with snow and in this case the boar hunt can be combined with wolf hunt(December-February). Normally specimens weighing 150 kg are collected, but there were some cases when specimens weighing over 250 kg have been also collected.

Hunting the wild boars from lookouts or stalking in the moonlight  is one of the most beautiful part of the hunt of these species. To shot a boar from the high-seat is not difficult but to shoot the ,,One ” is a different story .The careful behavior, good hearing and smelling ability of the wild boar and its intelligence makes hunting them a real challenge. Hunt in the snow can offer you an unforgettable experience.

Fenced area boar driven hunt and stalking for other games species
Wild boar hunting is the most popular hunting experience for hunters in Romania. For smaller groups, the driven hunt is a popular hunting experience. There are some fenced areas, where the daily bag can be between 35-50 pieces/5 guns. The wild boars inside the fences are not one bit tamer than those outside the fences, because the animals are captured from the wild, and the professional hunters take special care that the wild boars do not get used to the proximity of man.
First day of boar hunting
Second day of boar hunting
In some areas you can also hunt Fallow or Red deer, Mouflons besides the wild boar. Sometimes you might hit a fox or very rarely a golden jackal, of course.
 Â
Were shot around 60 boars . Of this amount 25 were males over 15 cm . La largest trophy was 24 cm long.Â
Â
During this month of fall the hunting season is open for all the big game species in Romania. So there is possibility for the hunting of several species as: roe deer ( buck until the 15th), red deer, chamois, wild boar etc. As hunting methods the deer species and chamois can be stalked, the wild boars can be shots on high-seat hunting, stalking and if are 3-4 hunters can be organized small driven hunts for few rifles.Â

At the end of red stag hunts
The Carpathian red deer come to their best time in September, when with the help of a little bit of cold, the begin to roar in search of becoming the owner of the mountains. The other males respond to the call, and try to fight the local male.We have several free range areas in Romanian Carpathians, where this  exciting and challenging hunt can bring your dream stag.Â
Congratulations to the hunters and to the team.
2 magnificent silver medal stags
One of the most elusive of the late summer species is the Wild Boar, or Russian Boar as they call it. At the end of summers large males can be shot . In this time of the year the boars spends all night eating cereals or fruits in the fields. So good results can be obtained stalking and waiting early morning or late evening in the places where they use to be or to cross. Â The hunt of these species can be combined with other species such as Roe deer.
We were very lucky and hunted 2 huge males.
Congratulations to our friends Michal& Damian.

The mating season or the rut, is the most exciting time of year for red deer and for red deer trophy hunters. Mature stags roar calling hinds to be became part of their harem to be protected from the sexual advances of other stags.  Stags also roars to announce their presence to rival stags and aggressively  roar back and forth each other. For trophy hunters the roar is their favoured time of the year,as this is one of the few times when the largest ,wiliest stags with the biggest antlers willingly show themselves.Â

After a long winter finally the spring arrived. The first greening of the grass is like the first sight of spring with that glimpse of brilliant green that soon grows to carpet the earth everywhere. Then the trees, warmed by the fresh sunlight and rain, begin to unfold their leaves until even the last late trees have unfurled their finery and it is as if the last of spring has completed its work and summer has arrived. It is as the greenery of new life. With spring many flowers bloom.  The morning time symphony of spring is carried out by the birds. They start very early, before dawn, and continue until the morning wanes toward midday. The roe deer hunt in spring time is one of the most beautiful hunts. We use to stalk for roe bucks early in the morning . In the evening, mainly we wait for the roe bucks on high-seat.This month I had the pleasure to meet again an old friend, with who a few years ago I hunted  red deer’s and capercaillies . This time came to hunt some  roe-bucks. He came with a fantastic weapon made by manufacturers of Ferlach-Johann Fanzoj.
http://www.fanzoj.com/
During the 3 days of hunting we shot 6 roe bucks and a boar. We have seen  more then 60 roe deers and of these around 25 were roe bucks. The shooting distance was between 80-200m . The weight of the trophies was between 210-440 g .
January  the second part of the month. The weather was warm for this time of the year. The temperature was around  2,4 0 C  above 0. The moon was in the last quarter and the sky was covered by clouds. The light was poor. To shoot a large trophy boar in this conditions is difficult because they are moving late in the dark and to estimate the size of the trophy is difficult sometimes  almost impossible. It is hard to tell if is male or female, if is coming alone to the feeding place. During this time the bears are in hibernation and we use to hunt for wild boars. In other parts of Europe there are no this problems or are subtle.  Here, where is one of the highest densities of brown bears, is difficult to hunt boars at the feeding places. Between wild boars and bears is a competition for surviving. The male boars can reach the weight of 180-250 kg sometimes 300 kg during the fall and of course before the breeding season. The weight of the females is not so high, is situated between 95-160 kg .
The high-seat hunt can be made at the places where the boars use to be.  ( feeding places, mud puddles etc ). During the evening boars can be found in this places and during the morning the high-seat hunt can be combined with stalking.
Day 1.
On the first day we went out to see the traces at the feeding places and to try the rifle. We checked out 4 feeding places. Everywhere we seen boar traces and on some places were really large. We decided where we will stay during the evening. In the forest we always can be see large single boar traces. Sometimes they came to the feeding places but never seen them during the winter. During the spring, this large males can be see at the feeding places with the bears. Â We call this boars ,, ghost boars”.We took the lunch, drank some shooting water (Palinka-40-500 -plum juice :)))), and taken a rest till the hunting. After a short rest we left the motel to hunt. We started at 15:30 PM . The distance was not so big from the village to the hunting area. In the first day our guest Larsen set with Janos on the high seat. During this time me and Istvan the other game keeper, have been on 2 different places to make the observations. The result of the evening was not so great. The wind blew all evening. A single male and other 2 groups of boars came. Unfortunately they felt the smell and run away from the places. It was to dark to stay during the night.
Day 2 :
The second day started in the same way like the first. We went out to check out the places. On the spot where they were last evening seems the boars does not came back. We found another place where was ice and the movement was good. We decided to try our luck. This was an open high-seat.  Wild boars were scratching trees and could be seen the how large were this animals. On the ice were some snowflakes and that helped us to see the black animals on the white surface. The high-seat was made in a beech tree. It was made on wood and covered around by branches with dried leaves. We cut new branches with leaves and improved ,,the Tarzan’s nest ”.This time Larsen was with me. We climbed the tree, took all our things and we set. This high seat was not comfortable, but we were here to hunt.We waited for a wild and once in our back we heard something. I turned slowly and I’ve seen a roe deer(buck) walking slowly through the woods. We waited more one and half hour and slowly the evening arrived. The light was growing weak. The temperature fell to 2-3 above 0. The sky was covered by clouds. Suddenly we hear something in the front of us in right side. Few minutes later a boar showed up. It was a young male very restless. The boar was 3 year old and the weight was around 100-110 kg. This type behavior is called,, cautious  behavior ”. Usually the young boars are not cautious but when at the feeding place is a dominant male or predators such wolves and bears, they are acting this way.(run from one side to the other, smelling and making a specific noise; ,, phhhhh ‘’).I’ve told Larsen: something is there that’s why the boar is acting like this ….and I was right few minutes later, a large pack of boars came out from the left side running straight to the place where was the corn. There were, I think around 40-50 boars( around 20 large boars, piglets and young boars). We tried to find a large male but was very difficult because they moved all the time. We looked at them …15 minutes and we could not found a male. They felt some smell and run away 2 times and finally they left. We could not believe that we were surrounded by boars, and we could not find the male. We decided to wait and to see what will happen. Slowly, started to rain. A fox came and we decided if the young male will come back we will shoot. The rain turned into snow…and we decided to try next day.
Day 3:
The 3rd day started not very well. We went to check out the places and to feed them. We stuck the car in mud and we had to take out somehow. We cut some branches, put under the tires and somehow we got out .The evening was without success. The weather was windy and snowy. We have not seen, even an animal moving.Late evening we decided to try stalking early in the morning because the wind stopped. The snowflakes fell slowly …covering everything with a fresh layer of snow.
Day 4:
We wake up, drank a coffee then we went to find the boars. We arrived and found some fresh traces. We tried to approach them but seems they were with few steps in the front of us. After 2 hours of climbing the hills we found nothing. In the evening we tried a place where we have seen the traces in the morning. We saw a large trace. It was a single boar. We went to the high-seat and prepared all. Few minutes later 3 roe deer showed up from the forest then 3 piglets with a sow. Later the male came out alone. It was what we are looking for. The light was good. it was before getting dark. Larsen slowly took the rifle, he shot and the boar fell down. We waited for few minutes then we went  to check out . We shot a very old boar. The age was estimated at more then 10 years . One of the tusks was broken and in the mouth it had 3 incisive. The average of the tusk was 16 cm. One of the tusks was 22 cm and the other 10 cm inside the jaw.
The used rifle was : Blaser R 93 , 300 WM –ammunition- RWS-UNI CLASSIC 180GR( 11,7 g).

End of February in the Carpathians: It was a nice afternoon when we left the village. The snow was big and in the sky were a few clouds. The temperature was around 0 C. From the village until the feeding place were 12 km. The big part of the road was a forestry road. After a few km crossing the field, we entered into an old spruce and beech forest. Near the road on the left and the right side we have seen more traces in the snow (large boar, red deer and brown bears). We let the car near the road, took all our stuff then the last 350 m we walked slowly in silence to the high-seat.
The high-seat was small house special designed for Nicolae Ceausescu’s bear hunts. In the house were 2 rooms .One of the rooms was larger then the other. In the larger room was a bed, a table with 3 chairs and a small fire place. The small room was used especial to shoot. This room had 3 windows. In the middle was the large window and in the sides 2 small. You could use each of the windows to shoot. In the room were also 2 chairs and a small bed.
When we arrived at the feeding place was a bear, and later came other 3 bears. All these happen in 3 hours. We entered in the high-seat at 4 o’clock. At 6 o’clock it was dark. The sky was clear sometimes could be seen the stars and half of a red moon. At 8 o’clock we opened the window. After 35 minutes of waiting suddenly we heard the howling of wolves. In the pack were young wolves(until 1 year old pups) as well. Around half past eight 2 wolves showed up in one of the corners, near a large tree like 2 ghosts .One of them was dark and the other was grey.
The dark wolf marked his territory then they left slowly. During this time 2 bears were on the bait eating. We closed the window and waited. One hour later the grey wolf came back we tried to shoot but it was chased away by one of the bears. We waited a few hours but they did not returned. Slowly I fell asleep. At almost 11 o’clock Damian woke me up . Slowly and sleepy I took my binocular and I started to watch. In the dark all the black spots were something and that something always moved….this was my impression . In 25 minutes we saw a black spot …then other… and another … 6 wolves were out and a bear on the bait. They started to eat parts of the bait. Slowly we opened the window and Damian shot. After the shot all the animals left the place running strait in the forest. The light was good for shooting … not for searching…. We searched the wolf 3 hours in the big snow and finally we found it. It was fallen from the shooting place at 35 m. We were so confused because there were a lot of traces and blood everywhere from the parts of the bait. We missed the traces 2 times but finally at 3 o’clock when we found the wolf. The moon was red.. it was a big wolf in the country of Dracula…. we shot one of his children of the night. The used rifle was Sauer 202, 30-06 Zeiss Victory. The ammunition was  Selier&Bellot 11,7 g.  Waidmannsheil !!!!

The Fagaras Mountains belong to the South Carpathians and are one of the most impressive mountain ranges in Romania. They are the country’s highest and largest mountains. They cover an area of 3,000 square kilometers. Across the Carpathians, there is only one mountain chain which is higher than the Fagaras, namely the Tatra Mountains which rise at the opposite, northern end of the Carpathians. The main ridge of the Fagaras Mountains forms a massive spine, which extends west to east in a fairly straight line for more than 70 kilometres – from the valley of the Olt River to the Piatra Craiului Mountains and the Iezer Mountains. The main peaks never drops below 2000 m over a distance of about 50 km. In the Fagaras Mountains can be found eight of the 14 Romania’s peaks over 2500m . There are also at least 42 peaks whose elevations is between 2400-2500m. The highest peak of the Fagaras Mountains ( and Romania) is called Moldoveanu and rises to 2544m in the eastern chunk of the Fagaras. But no less renowned than Moldoveanu is Negoiu: rockier, reigning in the west, at 2535m the 2nd highest summit in Romania. The wild beauty of the landscapes, a great number of prominent peaks, narrow crests, deep valleys and picturesque tarns prompted the French scientist Emmanuel de Martonne to refer to the Fagaras Mountains as the Transylvanian Alps.
Home of the Carpathian Chamois. The Fagaras Mountains can be considered the home of this subspecies which is the biggest of all the Rupicapra family in terms of trophy size and body size as well. In these mountain have been taken the world record in 1934.
One of the most beautiful Carpathian chamois trophy I saw in my life…..It was the second week of November. We tried to find a large trophy or a bizarre chamois…in any case something special . First day at 6 o’clock in the morning we went up in the mountains with all our stuff. After 4 hours of walking, we arrived at the end of the tree line…above the tree line starts the kingdom of the chamois…, cliffs…some trees ,and finally grass…stones…the mountain where was shot the world record in 1934. Near a small creek we settled down our small camp …we ate, had a rest …I think for one-two hours… then we left the camp to hunt…The weather was not the best…wind and in a few places snow….We climbed the most difficult places to find a real trophy. All day long we walked and hunt .We saw 20-30 pieces …The second day was almost the same….walked on the top of Transylvania… chamois here, there…wind and some fog,…
On the third day we were on the top….. peaks, cliffs, here there grass … some pine trees bellow….different group of chamois came and gone … On the first day we saw a group , but we do not seen this bizarre trophy in this group . It was the same group we saw on the first day… we looked during one hour the chamois …….. and wait a minute!!! One of them is …what we are looking for…we approach them carefully the distance was good(170 m) …the hunter put the backpack on a cliff the rifle on the backpack …we waited until the chamois was in a good position… one shot and chamois fell down ….it is one of the most beautiful trophy that I saw in my life. It was an extreme hunt. In 3 days we : walked more then 20 km, climbed the cliffs, wind on the top in the first 2 days ,slept under the sky. …. 45-50 Chamois….and finally this rare trophy …WMH. The used rifle was Blaser R 93 , 6,5×68 and the ammunition RWS ,  KS 8,2 g.
It was almost dark when the boar have showed up. We were on the high seat waiting for the moment . Actually we saw the boar before one night , when it was disturbed by a large and fat bear which have chased away . The light was better then the last night because the moon increased. We looked to the boar and we waited the right position for the shoot. Rod shot and the boar run into the bushes. We started to look for blood ….couldn’t find drops on the place where it was. A couple of meters of tracking and we found the first drops … were high on the leaves ….we lost once again the track and we have found … from the place where was shot , the boar run away 45 meters .It was shot through heart with 300 WM, (RWS-Uni Classic 11,7 gr). The weight of the boar was 180 kg , 19 cm long tusks. Congratulation to the hunter and to the team. WMH.
For year , I have dreamed of taking a huge red stag and for whatever reason, it wasn’t happening here in Queensland. My sons also had similar ambitions. These yearnings led to my eldest ,Rod, doing considerable research about alternative regions. He looked at New Zeeland and all over Europe, but prices concerned us and sometimes it was difficult to ascertain whether the game was really ,,free range’’. We finally decided on an outfitter in Romania and made a seven-day booking during the northern roar. My wife and I taken a 12-day sightseeing tour of Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland before we moved on to Romania and finally caught up with Rod ,our daughter-in-low  and grandson Oskar, who had been visiting Poland. There were greetings all round with our outfitter Ioan Banucu (pronounced Johan) and guide Bernard, plus a few others, including an Austrian hunter named  Gunnar. Much food was heaped on us then we deed all the official paper work and chose and tested our rifles, before finally hitting the sack at 11.30 pm . On the first day of hunting ….read more in article bellow … Â
