Chamois hunting in Romania is strictly regulated and organized only within officially approved hunting seasons, based on annual quotas. The hunting season start on 1st of September and ends on 15th of December.
The best time for the chamois hunting is between 10th of October- 10th of November for the open country type of environment and 25th of October -15th of December for rocky forested areas. Carpathian chamois hunt can be combined with other game species such as chamois, red deer, wild boar, roe deer.
The method of hunting is stalking and waiting at the places that are frequented. As with all mountain game the hunt for Chamois is a great experience with breathtaking views but also that kind of hunting that offers you unforgettable memories. The Carpathian Chamois may be hunted during the day, between 1.000 and 2.500 meters height, from above the tree line and down into the sharp rocky forested zones.
The trophy of the chamois is the well-developed set of horns. Most of the trophies are between 90 and 105 CIC with good chances to harvest trophies over 110 CIC. The evaluation of trophy is mandatory by law and is carried out according to the CIC methodology by a commission made up of technical staff and representatives of the national forest guard. In most of the areas the payments are based on the size of the trophies but exist as well the fixed price option with no restrictions for the size of the trophies.
The level of difficulty is from moderate to hard. At the end of November beginning of December in some places, hunting can also be organized for people with a lower physical condition.
The shooting distances are between 80 and 350 m.
Generally, the hunts are organized for a period of 3 days of hunting to have the best chance of harvesting a mature chamois. Most of the hunters manage to harvest the chamois in the first 2 days, but you must also take into consideration the rapid change in weather in the mountainous area. Thus, fog and heavy rain or snow can drastically reduce the chances of success of the hunt.
Recommended equipment: Mountain boots, binoculars, headlight waterproof clothing, headlamp, gloves and hiking sticks.
