Wild boar hunting is the most popular hunting experience for hunters in Romania. Wild boar hunting in Romania is strictly regulated and organized only within officially approved hunting seasons, based on annual quotas.
The hunting season start on 1st of June and ends on 31th of December for females, piglets. For the tuskers is all year round.
The best period for hunting the wild boars is between mid-November and early March. Wild boar hunting can be individual or collective.
The individual hunt of boars is made from the high-seats on the feeding places or by stalking. The careful behaviour, good hearing, the smelling ability of the wild boar and its intelligence makes hunting them a real challenge.
During the season the individual boar hunt can be combined with other game species such as red deer, roe deer and so on.
The most popular wild boar hunting in Romania is the driven hunt in wintertime. The drive is organized in large areas with forests and bushes with a big number of professional drivers, beaters, dogmen and boarhounds. During the driven hunt of boars, you can’t shoot other animals, your prey might only be varied by some fox and golden jackals. The driven hunts on your choice can be organized in open or closed range fenced areas.
The wild boar is a widespread species in Romania. The habitat of the wild boar is the broad-leaved forest with widespread underwood, wet ground, swamp and marshland. You can find this game in coniferous forest and even on the top of the mountains. The highest densities can be found in the Danube floodplain, in the plains and low hills. In general, males weigh between 140 and 200 kg. It is not uncommon for boars weighing over 250 kg to be harvested. The trophy consists of a pair of tusks. The tusks are measured according to the CIC methodology. The national record scores 142.50 CIC and was harvested in 2021.
