September is the month of the red stag in the hunting calendar. The valleys and mountain peaks echo with the deep voice of the crowned king of the forest. The red deer hunting in Romania is strictly regulated and organized only within officially approved hunting seasons, based on annual quotas. The hunting season start on 1st of September and ends on 31th of December.
The best time for the red stag hunting is during the rut. In hilly and plain areas, the best period is between 12th and 25th of September and in mountainous areas between September 18th and the first days of October.
The red stag hunt can be combined with other game species such as red deer, wild boar, roe deer, brown bear and in some areas with chamois.
The method of hunting is stalking and in rare cases the high-seats. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon you, accompanied by the hunting guide, will go to the places of rut. Most guides know how to call the deer and will try to bring it in front of your rifle or you will try to get close to it.
The trophy of the red stag is the well-developed set of antlers. Most of the trophies are between 6 and 9 kg in the hill and plane regions and between 7 and 10 kg in the mountain regions. From time to time are shot very strong stags with the weight of trophies over 12 kg. After the hunt the trophy is cleaned, blanked and put in dry & cool place. After 24 hours will be measured and the weight of the skull with antlers will be take in consideration for payment. The evaluation of trophy is mandatory by law and is carried out according to the CIC methodology by a commission made up of technical staff and representatives of the national forest guard.
The level of difficulty is from easy to moderate. In some places, hunting can also be organized for people with a lower physical condition.
The shooting distances are between 50 and 200 m.
Generally, the hunts are organized for a period of 3-4 days of hunting to have the best chance of harvesting a mature medal class stag. In hill and mountain regions the rut can be disturbed by the wolves.
Recommended equipment: boots, rubber boots, binocular, headlight waterproof clothing, headlamp, gloves, shooting sticks.
