Is Bear Hunting Legal in Romania?

After a 9-year prohibition period in 2024, Law No. 242/2024 was adopted. According to this law, a prevention (hunting) quota of 426 bears for 2024 and 426 bears for 2025 was established. At the same time, the rules regarding the harvesting of specimens were set. According to these regulations, bears larger than 400 CIC with a margin of error of 5% could not be exported, the trophies being confiscated by territorial representatives of the National Forest Guard. It was also prohibited to shoot females with cubs younger than 2 years old. For these 2 years the hunting season was set for all year round.

The bear hunts like the other game species are carried out exclusively in authorized hunting grounds and only within the limits of approved quotas. Exact dates, availability and conditions may vary from year to year, depending on legal decisions of the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (MEWF).
